3D week 4

During the first 3D session I arranged a group of different sized plinths into an interesting composition with some leaning, some vertical and some horizontal. After I was satisfyed with the arrangment i started pinning thread to the corners of the boxes until it was busy with thread and all interlinking. I captured this arrangement in a drawing so i knew what it originally looked like.

The aim of doing this is so that i could then focus on the string to make some interesting outcomes. I started drawing on tracing paper making the string appear bolder whilst the plinths are faded behind. I incorporated stitch into the composition aswell as it brings another aspect of visual interest.

I used the tracing paper so i could then photocopy the piece allowing the light to seep through to capture both the plinths and the lines. By using this method i was able to produce various outcomes, some of which have been inverted. I think these 4 pieces together create much more of an impact than the tracing paper on its own. This series produces a visually exciting piece all of which work really well with one another. The lines allow for a busier more interesting composition without it becoming to overwhelming for the viewer. I am pleased with the outcome as i find these pieces quite abstracted as the viewer wouldn't neccesserily understand what the lines are suppose to represent which i think makes the work more fascinating.

The next session was very structural which is not always my strongest area. By producing a series of controlled lines on paper i was able to then use the layout to help me draw proportional stairs. I found this task tricky and it took me a while to get my head around how to create the stairs. However after observing the tutor demonstrate a couple of times i was able to create my own. Even though the stairs arnt very big within the composition i felt pleased with myself for being able to complete the task. If i was to improve i would make the stairs larger in the composition and perhaps have some back to back, i should have tryed to develop this piece and challanged myself instead of just leaving it simple.

However i did produce some interesting compositions from the image by photocopying and inverting. This is a simple composition yet its effective due to the symmetrical contrast between them. Even though these pieces boldly contrast due to the positive and negative they still compliment each other because of the white lines in one and the black lines in the other. I thought i would move onto develop some more complex arrangements.

Here i have incorporated the positive and negative photocopies into the same arrangements. I think these appear very interesting and have a slight optical illusion effect on the viewer due to the 3D nature of the compositions. These are more visually exciting that the image above so im glad i went on to developing the arrangements.

The last session invloved working onto an A2 piece of paper which has been pinned onto the wall. Stings are then attached to both sides of the wall next to the paper and one beneath the paper. Charcoal is then rubbed uo and down the string which is then tightened and twanged onto the paper to create a straight line. By doing this it creates an illusion that you are looking down into the image. I produced a series of lines to produce rectanges indicating buildings and then rubbed out the excess lines in order to not make the composition too confusing. I really enjoyed this approach to drawing as its not one that i have explored before, i found it to be really effective making the viewer feel as though there having a birds eye view to the buildings. I started to develop the building by adding windows but i didn't make the lines very accurate therefore the windows aren't evenly spread. However, by adding tone with the charcoal i think this improves the image. This is definately an approach that i will consider in the future i im to produce controlled drawings.

2D contemporary imaging week 3

To try and focus on the correct proportions i used a grid as my drawing surface. I placed a transparent box with a grid around the miniature object to use the printed squares as my system of measurement. I tryed to use the grid references to precisely scale the caulk however i found this really difficult, in this first drawing i found the grid paper to disproportion my drawing more than if i was using a blank surface. However after a few sketches i became more confident with the boxes and started to work square by square making sure the drawing lines up with the one in the previous square, Enabling me to interpret the 3D object into a 2D object. This drawing could be improved by adding more tone to try and give it slight form also i dont think the shape is quite right so that could be worked on.

This drawing is much better in terms of proportions as i became use to the structured surface. The tonal qualities help add dimension to the drawing therefore giving the impression of form. I used pastel as my media here and highlighted the text, logo and texture with a fine liner to enhance the features. I prefer this drawing to the previous, however again i think darker tonal work would have been benefitial to make it appear more realistic.

During this session i focused on using the Durer grid. This is a grid that is placed between the object and the artist whilst a similar grid is drawn on the drawing surface.By creating a grid on the paper and on the object it allows me to see square by sqaure what part of the setting should be placed where, allowing me to make a rather accurate representation of the composition. I found this method very useful and i am please with the outcome this technique creates. If im doing observational work in the future i think it would be helpful to use this method.

This is the setting of which i worked from.

This is a negative photocopy of the above drawing. Im some ways i think this black and white version is more effective, it appears to be more visually striking. The white highlights detailed areas which the drawing didnt quite showcase enough. The contrasting tones produce a very interesting composition whilst the impression of form is still created. I prefer this image to the drawing as i find it much more visually exciting as it creates an instant impact on the viewer.

Using a photocopy of the original drawing i folded it into squares and began to form interesting structures. This exercise was representative of the squares used in the production of the image. These structures appear effective due to the questionable drawings on each surface face, it turns the image into an abstracted form where the viewer (if they haven't seen the drawing before hand) would be inquisitive as to what the marks on the paper indicate. I think these structures appeared to be more effective in the photographs as i was able to capture the shadows created by the piece.

Combined media week 2

This brief was about incorporating lightsources into the work in various different ways. The first task incorporated the use of a photocopier combinding the tracing sheets of paper together and allowing each layer to appear, the image becoming weaker as the layers progressed. My only critisism would be that the sheets were limited to about 6 layers as it was difficult to see the image on the bottom layers. If i was to develop this technique i might use less layers and incorporate more detail, this would be effective as it would be a clearer overall image.

The light source has effectively influenced the appearance as it enables the overlay of the imagery. The lack of colour produces a moody quality consisiting with tones of greys, black and white. I was able to change the arrangement of the layers to produce different outcomes, some much more bold than others emphasizing the thicker marks contrasting to the softer marks behind.

I have sussessfully translated 3D objects into 2D drawings using the photocopier as the lightsource, however the layering enables depth to be created in the composition.

The second task i was introduced to involved an overhead projector as the lightsource. This consisted of overlaying multiple acetate images to produce interesting compositions. I used the media of stick and ink in my interpretations of the acetate images as i was able to examine my work from a distance allowing the stick to create interesting qualities of mark. The measurements were obviously hightened projecting a larger scale onto the wall and enabling me to work onto A1 sheets. This method of projection and combining acetate imagery is very useful to produce drawings as i was able to combine different aspects from each sheet of acetate to create an abstracted piece. The tree on the image below, i decided to only feature certain lines instead of depiting every single mark projected onto the wall. This leaves for a more abstrated image and allows the viewer to make their own mind up on what the subject could be. Combinding different media adds an aspect of interest, such as the thread dipped in ink. This causes the excess ink to drip down the page adding a different feature of line/mark as well as another textural qualtiy.

The third task was the use of a slide projector which flicked from one image to the next every couple if seconds. This left me a very limited amount of time to pick out a feature to draw so i decided to focus on the quality of line, mark or shape as these are quick to capture. I was able to produce miniture images to use in conjunction with the slides. I was able to build the smaller images up into a larger overall composition. Light influences the appearance in these drawings by again projecting and allowing me to capture that moment. Limitations of this method is that it was challanging to produce a detailed image with only a couple seconds of projection. However, this achieved quite an abstracted outcome as it consists of various drawing of which do not relate to one another.

From the projection drawings done on the previous day I identified compositions which i found interesting. I then bordered off small segments which i could then abstract/manipulate furthur. I used a range of surfaces then translated marks onto these surfaces by piercing, scrunching, sewing etc.

I then decided to try and use other materials and dip them into wax to see if this created any other effects. It enabled the material to hold a form and therefore achieve a three dimensional quality. As this material consists of small holes i thought it would be interesting if i was to put it onto the projector.

Again using the projector as a lightsource i was able to achieve positive and negative imagery.

As we have been working with acetate alot in this brief just to draw from i thought i would use the acetate as the main material and burn a shape into it instead of it simply being 'drawn' on. So i used a soldering iron to burn the shape of a womans figure which achieved an interesting quality of mark.

Coloured acetate was added to create slight depth in the projection.

The next brief incorporated the use of found objects, being the debris found on the floor around the art department or outside. I used selotape to pick up the rubbish, with it being a transparent material i could then simply stick it to the acetate. I tryed to pick up fragments which related to me in some aspect, such as crushed pastels and pencil shavings which i could have used in my drawings and a cigarette bud to express my dislike. I tryed to produce an interesting composition by incorporating block sobjects contrasting to brittle more faded subjects. Once i had picked up the found objects i added various quotes about how i felt towards them. By including text it adds another dimension to the work and helps break up the composition allowing the viewing eye to travel around taking in each part seperately.

The projected image onto the wall is more interesting in a way as the black and white tones make it difficult to depict from one subject to the next. It makes my work more inquisitive.

I added coloured acetate which on the light box compliments the composition really well. Even though the block colours look effective it draws attention away from the actual detail of the found debris which was not my initial aim. Also the projection doesnt work as the tones are too dark and hazy. I dont think i'll use coloured acetate again in a projection this detailed.

This is my final acetate which i have developed slightly more by incorporating stitch and holes burnt by the soldering iron. I think this extra detail looks really effective in the composition as this brief had the potential to produce something quite plain. I enjoyed working on this exercise and its a technique i will consider using in the future.

Viscom week 1

Observation and experimentation

Our first brief was to consider the use of letterforms and stencils provided to produce line. I had to closely study these letter forms and start to deconstruct them and see them more clearly as perhaps a three dimensional form consisting of curves, straight lines, angles. I had to produce design sheets consisting of these letterforms but perhaps in a more abstract fashion of maybe just a curve which may have been influenced/taken from an ‘O’.

I started my design by over lapping ‘ABC’ , a simple yet effective technique of overlay adds dimension to the design so it seems as though there is depth to the composition. I used the technique of scratching with stick and ink to produce more unique marks and different tones again adding to the 3 dimensional qualities of the design.

Following on from the idea of stick and ink I incorporated colour into the black and white design. Adding bright colour helps capture attention, drawing in the observing eye as they contrast to the bold scratches of the ink.  I overlapped the letters again as I liked the dimensions created in the previous design so decided to continue with a similar method. I think this design is effective as again it’s a rather simple composition, I didn’t want to overcomplicate the arrangement as it would make detecting one letter from the next difficult. However if I was to continue with this theme I think I would make the arrangement and letterforms more abstract leaving an inquisitive design. I could achieve this by cropping into a section of my work and enlarging it so it is purely lines composing the composition, intriguing the viewer as to what the lines could originally have formed.

I choose to use mix media in the next composition involving stick and ink and college, the block colours create more of a statement than simple line marks so allows the design to include some contrast.

I then inverted these designs in black and white as well as colour, highlighting different features of the arrangement and allowing for a more professional , clean finish. These designs could be developed further and perhaps used to promote aspects in which letter is used, such as a poster for children’s alphabet as one example.

Typographics

Inverted...

then had to continue with the idea of letter forms but was able to include materials and i was required to consider in more detail the colour, texture, tone and scale of the work. I decided to use materials such as newspaper, stamps, wrapping paper, wall paper etc..materials which consisted of some type of pattern or text already. I found adding stitch to combine the college together added textural and visual qualities to my work as it produces interesting marks. This work reminded me of kurt schwitters as he used aspects of college and typography in his work.

 Inverted images ..

The inverted images add a completely different quality to my work.

Back of the inverted images ...

Kurt Schwitters
This is a well known piece by Schwitters, he incorporates different materials in his work here such as travel tickets, envelopes, letters, bits of paper etc. His work, although it maybe rather intergrated in the composition, also includes letter and letter forms. However, it is difficult to read the text therefore adding a sense of intrigue to the viewer as to what the letter could possibly have been about or where he was travelling to and why. His work contains meaning from his life which i think is important as it allows one to connect with the piece and really become involved in it. I kept his work in mind when i was producing my own by adding stamps and cinema tickets to, like schwitter's work, allow the viewer to wonder what i had seen or who i was writting to.
