Drawing and mapping

This brief was to produce a sound map so i went on a short walk and recorded all the sounds i heard in the environment around me. Once i had collected my recording I decide to express the sound in a more 3 dimensional form, something which I wouldn’t have considered before this unit. I decided to take a similar approach to Chris Kenny and use wire, to describe the sounds I heard on the short walk, for example screaming children would incorporate thin wave forms like a trace on a heart monitor. More peaceful noises such as singing birds had spiralled sections to represent a more relaxed feel. I used red wire for the louder sounds which stand out in my recording to allow them stand out to the viewer.  I turned the lights off and focused a spotlight at the wire at one stage to see how the shadows reacted, this appeared to add another dimension to the work as it took on the appearance that there was a drawing behind the actual wire. During this brief i was trying to communicate the organisation of information, the information being the sound. I enjoyed producing this piece and i found it to be a successful outcome.

In this session I choose some random co-ordinates and was given a small square of acetate which had a map on it. I then projected it onto the wall and and was told to interpret that map in anyway i wanted. So i decided to use a mixture of media including pastel, charcoal, graphite powder and tipex to highlight certain areas. I began to mark out the dark sections with black pastel and filled in other sections with the other materials leaving a patchy outcome of different tones including some blank areas to create an area of contrast. I used the tipex to help define inbetween the sections. The piece appears to be rather geometric as i am tying to communicate the environment through the use of a map. I think this map is rather successful as the contrasting tones work well together to build up a detailed composition. However i think i could have improved my work by being more explorative as i have only produced a flat image, i could have tryed to incorporate 3D information to make the work visually and texturally more exciting.

I used PVC here and cut into it using a craft knife to produce a map like structure. I cut out sections to try to represent the map on the previous page. I liked this material as i was able to pin it to the wall and instead of creating a 2D effect i was able to produce a raised surface throughout the piece, it appears to be fluid as the material falls curves are formed, creating a rather delicate looking structure.
